Chiropody is a branch of medical science that involves the assessment and management of foot and lower limb disorders: this includes the management of a wide variety of disorders, injuries and local manifestations of systemic conditions. A Chiropodist is a primary care professional practicing in podiatric medicine that specializes in assessment, management and prevention of diseases and disorders of the foot.

Chiropody training involves intensive didactic and clinical aspects of normal and pathological mechanics of the lower limb. Chiropodists are able to prescribe and carry out treatments including minor surgical procedures, therapeutic treatments including laser, ultrasound, iontophoresis, extracorporeal shock wave therapy and electrical treatments.

Typically Chiropodists:

  • Consult with patients and other physicians on how to prevent foot problems
  • Diagnose and treat ulcers, skin and nail diseases, and deformities
  • Perform surgeries to correct or remedy such problems as ingrown toenails
  • Prescribe therapies and perform diagnostic procedures
  • Prescribe or fit patients with inserts called orthotics that correct walking patterns
  • Treat conditions such as: bunions, corns, calluses, heel spurs, warts, infections, ingrown nails, and plantar fasciitis

The modern Chiropodist is uniquely placed to provide comprehensive footcare.
